Darlington Mowden Park is delighted to confirm the coaching team that will lead our 3rd XV into an exciting new era for the 2026/27 season.
Following last season's CANDY League 3 South title-winning campaign, Paul Johnstone and Matthew Cuckson will once again join forces on the touchline as the squad embarks on its next chapter, stepping into the RFU league pyramid for the first time in North East Counties 3 North.
The move represents another significant milestone for the club, strengthening the senior player pathway and providing an even greater platform for players to develop and compete.
Paul Johnstone – Coach
A familiar and highly respected figure around Darlington Mowden Park, Paul Johnstone brings decades of experience and an unrivalled knowledge of the club to the coaching setup.
A true Mowden stalwart, Paul has dedicated countless years to developing players through the club's junior section. This season sees him coaching many of the same players as senior rugby players that he first coached as youngsters, a testament to both his commitment and the strength of the club's player pathway.
His experience, calm leadership and passion for developing players continue to make him an invaluable part of the 3rd XV environment.
Speaking ahead of the new season, Paul said:
"Last year the 3rd team pulled together as a team and played for each other. This year is another opportunity to carry on where they left off, playing fabulous rugby with a new set-up and new players. There can be no limit."
Matthew Cuckson – Coach
Matthew Cuckson returns for his second season at Darlington Mowden Park after making an immediate impact during his first year at the club.
Working alongside Paul Johnstone, Matthew helped guide both the 2nd and 3rd XVs throughout the 2025/26 campaign, culminating in the 3rd XV lifting the CANDY League 3 South title.
Now, with the team stepping into the RFU league pyramid, Matthew is looking forward to building on that success and helping another group of players reach their full potential.
Speaking about the season ahead, Matthew said:
"This season I'm really excited to be working with the 3rds and helping them win this league, making it two from two. There's a great bunch of players and I'm excited to see them excel and fulfil their potential, both as individuals and as a team. I have every confidence they'll give everything they've got, support one another and enjoy another great season together."
