National Two North: Darlington Mowden Park 61–13 Wharfedale
On a bright afternoon at the Darlington Mowden Park Arena, the message from the coaching team before kick-off was simple and clear: continuity and execution in everything we do. Against a Wharfedale side featuring several new faces, including former Mowden Park centre Callum Trees returning in the fly-half shirt, the home side delivered exactly that, producing an impressive nine-try performance to secure a comprehensive 61-13 victory.
The final score reflected Mowden's clinical finishing and ability to capitalise on opportunities, although the visitors played their part in an entertaining and competitive contest throughout.
Mowden needed only two minutes to open the scoring. Moving the ball confidently through the backs, space appeared for Junior Newton, who finished clinically to give the hosts an early 5-0 lead.
The home side struck again just four minutes later. Tyler Armstrong powered through the midfield with a powerful break before a series of close-range forward carries stretched the Wharfedale defence. Elvis Teketi-Fuki was on hand to crash over from short range and double the advantage. Newton converted 12-0
The second try appeared to spark Wharfedale into life. The visitors responded with increased intensity, bringing physicality both on and off the ball and beginning to establish territorial pressure. Their efforts were rewarded with a penalty from Callum Trees to reduce the deficit to 12-3.
Mowden's response showcased their attacking threat. After Wharfedale used the kicking game to gain territory, one loose kick fell into the hands of Alfie Warwick. Spotting space, Warwick accelerated through the defensive line and raced clear before delivering a perfectly timed pass to Liam Checkfield, who crossed for Mowden's third try. Newton added the conversion. 19-3
To their credit, Wharfedale refused to go away. The visitors enjoyed their strongest spell of the first half, scoring through an excellent break from their scrum-half before Trees added a second penalty. Suddenly the scoreboard read 19-13 and the game was finely balanced.
As has been the case on several occasions this season, once Mowden found their rhythm they proved extremely difficult to contain with the final eight minutes of the half belonged entirely to the home side.
Excellent work from the set piece created sustained pressure and laid the platform for the forwards to take control. Alfie Barron was the beneficiary, diving over from close range after a dominant attacking sequence. Newton added the extras. 26-13
Mowden then finished the half in style. Following another period of effective forward play, Tyler Armstrong produced a superb individual finish, beating defenders and racing under the posts. Newton's conversion gave the hosts a commanding 33-13 lead at the interval.
Half Time 33-13
The visitors began the second half with renewed determination and spent the opening five minutes camped inside the Mowden 22. Sustained pressure tested the home defence, but Mowden remained disciplined and eventually found relief through a clearance kick. A subsequent knock-on handed Mowden a scrum, and from that platform came the next decisive moment.
From the resulting set piece, Jacob Oliver took centre stage. Picking up at the base from around 40 metres from the line, the powerful forward burst through the defence before support recycled the ball. Staying involved in the attack, Oliver finished the move himself, bundling over from close range for Mowden's sixth try. Newton maintained his flawless kicking performance by adding the conversion. 40-13.
The next ten minutes saw territory and possession exchanged as both sides made errors and engaged in a period of tactical kicking and set piece chess. The deadlock was finally broken by a trademark burst from Ewan Greenlaw. Exploding through midfield, Greenlaw covered around 40 metres and put Mowden firmly on the front foot. As the hosts threatened the line, a Wharfedale defender was judged to have deliberately killed the ball and received a yellow card. From the resulting scrum, Scrum half Joe Davis linked effectively with teammates before crossing out wide for his first try in Mowden colours. Newton's excellent conversion extended the lead further. 47-13
One of the defining features of Mowden's performance was their work at the line-out. Repeatedly disrupting Wharfedale possession, the hosts turned defensive situations into attacking opportunities. Their eighth try came from exactly that scenario. Deep inside their own 22, Mowden stole another Wharfedale line-out Jacob Butterill leaping like a Salmon, before moving the ball quickly through the backs. Greenlaw again provided the spark with a powerful midfield surge before releasing Reuben Dyer in space. Dyer finished confidently before converting his own try. 54-13
The final score of the afternoon perfectly reflected the collective nature of Mowden's performance, quick thinking from David Shenas and Alfie Warwick launched the attack, while excellent handling, support lines and continuity across the team kept the move alive. The ball eventually found Josh Oppong 15 metres from the line and the powerful lock was never going to be denied, galloping over for Mowden's ninth try. David Shenas making his debut added the conversion to complete the scoring and cap another excellent afternoon at the Arena. 61-13.
While the scoreline ultimately favoured the hosts, Wharfedale deserve considerable credit for their effort and commitment throughout the contest. The visitors scored on each of their first three visits to the Mowden 22, showed resilience when under pressure and remained competitive despite the growing scoreboard. They were more than competitive at scrum time and demonstrated enough quality in patches to suggest their current league position does not reflect their potential.
Former Mowden player Callum Trees contributed eight points through two penalties and a conversion, while Wharfedale's try came during their strongest spell of the first half.
If they can maintain greater continuity and consistency over longer periods, they appear a side capable of climbing away from the lower reaches of the table.
