Mowden Park's Under 7's played two games on a glorious Sunday morning at Guisborough and both were played in a cracking spirit of sportsmanship and fairness. Mowden rotated their playing squad throughout the game which comprised of Oliver, Ed, Sophie, Kyle, James, Jack and Ian. Guisborough made strong start on their home pitch and scored the first points of the day to start the ball rolling in a thrilling game. Both teams showed some excellent running rugby and at half time Guisborough led 5-4 despite tries from Kyle, Ed, Sophie and James. After a half time team talk from the coaches it was back to the action and the standard from both sides improved even further. Handling was good despite the muddy conditions and only at the very end did Guisborough edge ahead to eventually win 11-8. Mowden's tries in the second period came from Sophie and a great three running tries from Kyle who the opposition were finding hard to handle.
The second contest began shortly after and again the standard of rugby was very good from these young players. This time however, Mowden started quickest with Oliver breaking through to score almost straight from the kick off. The tagging was much improved in this second game with Mowden's youngsters not letting the opposition have any free time on the ball. Ian got on the scoresheet next after a great run set up the first of his three tries, before Kyle (2), Sophie, and Oliver finished the scoring with another two fine tries. The players were improving throughout the game and benefitting from the advice given by their coaches as the game wore on. This free scoring rugby, in combination with some good tagging meant the final score in this game was 9-6 to Mowden Park.
Some great play from the youngsters from both clubs therefore ended with 17 points scored each over the two games and some impressive performances throughout both teams.
