This fixture was preceded by confusion as parents were directed to Gateshead, then Acklam, Acklam Park home of Middlesbrough RUFC then Acklam RUFC. The Head Coach gives an unreserved apology and subs were waved for those most affected.
The players were fired up by this mess or the sun. Performances against 2 Billingham sides, feared earlier in the season, left their players in tears. Little sympathy was to be had as these were the tears of players who had not tasted defeat before (and were a bit spoilt by never losing). The support play, passing, running into space, defending and running forward were fantastic. The odd forward pass and offside occurred but could be forgiven. Discipline was excellent except for the defending line. It was hard to criticise players for breaking ranks when they went onto make 3 successive tags. Victory against Guisbrough was followed by a match designed to raise Redcar’s self esteem. It took 7 vs 6, on field coaching, a referee who seemed to accept a £5 bribe in favour of Redcar and a sin binning for deliberate cocoon whilst off side to make it anywhere near even.
Harry L won the beast shirt for tireless running, and excellent captaincy and leadership of the defensive line. Ellie was woman of the match for outstanding running forward, side step and lay off to give Danny a try.
The most pleasing thing was the whole team: James D, Alfie T Arty, Aodan, Faith and Jonny each played their part.
“I was dead chuffed,” said Furness, ignoring his own geographical incompetence.
