Darlington Mowden Park U8s were at home for the first of two big tag festivals at the Northern Echo Arena in two weeks. They were without Head Coach, John Furness, and fellow coach, Graham King. John F was seen in a fluorescent jackets waving his arms at others coaches. Graham’s absence was due to bereavement. Aodan Furness was serving a one match suspension after his sending off during the previous week’s training. Eoghann Furness who has helped a couple of times was on academic leave (homework). Harrison King was on compassionate leave after his great grandma (graham’s grandma) died. The team sends it’s condolences to you gentlemen. Despite all these setbacks Mowden were undaunted.
Their team work meant the squad all helped. Thomas G, James D, Grace G. Ellie, Shenghai, Alfie, Jonny, Harry L and Joshua T all played excellent rugby. Hardly any forward passes were seen, several great body swerves, strength running directly forward especially from Grace and sportsmanship from Jonny and Ellie happing playing for opposition who were short. They played teams they have previously struggled with: Bedlington, Durham and Westoe. They looked comfortable at holding their own despite cold, rain and lots of mud. In the post match interview given by head coach John Furness to John Furness he said, “ I’m very proud of them. They are looking a formidable rugby team. Actually, I don’t think they need me any more. I’ll just go and tidy up.” Followed by, “That’s very kind of you Iain. A pint of bitter please.”
Men of the match awards could have gone to many players but this week it was Jonny and James D.
