Well here it was…..a home game and where else to play it but at the second biggest rugby stadium in England! The lads had come prepared and were more focused with some level headed warming up before the game, taking in the surroundings and realising how important a good performance was needed against a vastly improved Stockton side.
After a deep and meaningful team talk by yours truly, using the leftovers on the white board in the first team changing room set the lads out of the tunnel ready to take on a Stockton side that has gone from strength to strength with some very good recent games to their name.
Referee Mike Nicholson started the game and the larger than usual crowd cheered on their respective teams who competed for the ball fairly. Both sets of forwards were putting their bodies on the line with good rucking, mauling and scrummaging.
The Mowden backs used the very wide pitch to their advantage, spreading the ball wide wherever possible. Mowden took the lead with a try by Callum ‘Jimbo’ Robinson after putting pressure on the backs line after some great forward work. Max King and Adam Brown also got their names on the score sheet showing that the u13’s aren’t all about running away from the big lads and touching down in the corner.
Callum Piert finished off the Mowden scoring but it wasn’t all plain sailing with Stockton scoring two tries of their own and pushing towards the line towards the end of the match.
‘Jim’ Robinson got the only conversion of the game – and what a game, thanks to the committee for allowing the lads to play on the centre stage and we can’t wait to be on there again.
A great performance by both teams, next week is a tough one against Durham City at Hummersknott Academy, see you there.
Lots of love,
Roland
