Maybe it was the benign weather conditions that had the team out of sorts, but even in the warm up there was a sense that something wasn’t quite right; the lads were quiet and a little half hearted and despite a strong reminder from Coach Law, about last weeks buzz word , ‘attitude’, the team failed to flick the switch on and fell behind straight away as the Guisborough centre raced through (0-7)
In fact, it took another Guisborough score (0-14) before the lads finally decided to start playing. Excellent scrummaging, with the returning Bearpark driving his man backwards, secured the backs some ball and it was Delaidriti who hot stepped his way through to narrow the gap (5-14).
The team were now starting to fire and went close on a number of occasions, but just couldn’t take the opportunities that were there for them through a series of knock-ons and bad decisions. Failing to take those chances came back to haunt Park, when just on half time Guisborough moved the ball upfield and were rewarded with a penalty. The ball was tapped and passed to the big prop who went over (5-19)
Mowden rang the changes at half time and started the second half well, but again simple mistakes, that would normally be executed with ease, proved costly. A loose ruck and a knock on, and Guisborough secured a bouncing ball and went through to score virtually unchallenged in the corner (5-24)
Park rallied and after camping on the Guisborough try line, the ever-improving Wind took a short pass from Patterson to go over between the posts (12-24)
Guisborough were now coming firmly under the pump, with Graham in particular showing strong and determined running, as a series of chances were created by Park. However, even when it seemed inevitable they would score, handling errors and try line fever proved costly. From one of these errors, the ball somehow made its way to the impressive Guisborough centre who ran home from his own 5m line (12-29)
In the final minutes both sides added a try; Brown somehow touching down a Guisborough clearance (17-29) before the Guisborough prop added his second to finish the match (17-34)
A disappointing result but these matches happen, and it shouldn’t detract form the progress we have made this season. On another day we would have won the game; today it did feel a little bit like we beat ourselves! We put it behind us and look forward to next weeks game away to Redcar where I’m sure the lads will be desperate to show what they can do.
MOTM – Ollie Myers. A brilliant performance from the Teesdale Tornado; he was here, there and everywhere in an athletic performance that saw him cover every part of the pitch several times over. Well done Ollie
