DMP won an even game that was decided on several fine margins, not least excellent player rotation by coach Taylor (I).
Furness scored a penalty (6 mins) when he could have run it. However DMP being first on the scorecard was psychologically important.
Consett replied with a try (10 min) that DMP forced wide. That meant the conversion was hard and so missed.
Following an even period of play Hinde (on for Wild) broke clear to sprint 3/4 pitch. He scored under the posts (18 mins) that meant a routine conversion for Furness. Half time it was 10-5 for DMP.
The second half action saw Consett go over the try line but Park held the ball up with his leg under a pile of players. Consett also broke clear only for Hind to tackle illegally high. Advantage was played but came to nothing. Hinde was lucky not to see yellow.
Then it was DMP’s turn to put pressure on moving the ball well from side to side. Turnbull created space for Henry. He was tackled and Wood made ground before the next breakdown. Furness saw and exploited the gap created by the teams persistence. (39 mins) He scored and converted.
Consett replied with a try (45 mins) but it was again scored wide and so not converted.
With a few minutes left DMP scrum turned over the ball in Consett’s half. Maull went in to score (58 mins) despite a high tackle on the line. Arguably it should have been a penalty try. The conversion was wide and missed.
Consett did not give up. The action ended after Furness made 20 yards to relieve pressure only to be brought down by a tackle to his throat. Perhaps this would have seen a card earlier in the game.
DMP await confirmation of their opponents in the next round of the plate. They need to build on their success today to progress
