A high scoring contest saw Mowden salvage a brace of bonus points thanks to late Euan McKirdy try. Despite having led at the break, a strong second half burst from the hosts saw them claim maximum points.
Mowden made a lightning start to the game, with Ben Frankland coming close to opening the scoring 2 minutes in when the centre was held up over the line. They didn't have to wait long for their first try though, as Frankland latched on to a brilliant long pass from Joe Craggs to open the scoring. Garry Law converted, and things got better for the visitors soon after when Brandon Asher-Wood weaved his way over after a flowing first phase move from a midfield scrum. The hosts responded well, and narrowed the gap with an unconverted try for centre Connor Hayhow after a pinpoint crossfield kick. Rams then began to show their strength in the set piece and had their second try after 25 minutes when Number 8 Robbie Stapley dotted down after a powerful 5m scrum. Both tries were unconverted leaving DMP with a slender 2 point advantage. The Rams scrum continued to put Mowden under pressure and prop Ralph Appleby was sent to the sin bin on the half hour mark. Despite being down to 14, Mowden kept their discipline and a brace of Garry Law penalties saw their lead extended to 8 at the break. 10-18.
Rams started the second half in similar fashion to how Mowden started the first, with a brace of quickfire tries to give them their first lead of the afternoon. First Stapley crossed after another powerful 5m scrum, before a well worked try for full back Michael Dykes. Mowden then worked their way back into the game, but were dealt a cruel blow when Jack Rossiter scored an interception try despite an illegal tackle on Ben Frankland in the build up. A well taken try for Callum Mackenzie brought Mowden back to within one score, but once again it was the Rams pack who delivered a decisive score when James McCrae dotted down from a scrum. This left Mowden 36-25 down heading into the final stages, needing a fourth try to secure a brace of losing bonus points. The all important score came on 79 minutes, when scrum half McKirdy dived over after a quick tap close to the Rams line.
The result sees Mowden leapfrog Blackheath into 11th place, and stay within touching distance of Bishop's Stortford and Birmingham Moseley above them. DMP will be hoping to make it 3 home wins in a row on Saturday when they take on Cambridge at the Arena in a 3pm kick off. Tickets are available to buy online by clicking here.
