Mowden suffered their heaviest defeat of the season against a clinical Caldy side who closed the gap on league leaders Rosslyn Park in the process. After a close first half the visitors drew clear after half time on a frustrating afternoon for the home side.
Mowden started well, winning a series of penalties in the Caldy half in the opening stages. Caldy were reduced to 14 early on after Nick Royle was sent to the bin for a deliberate knock on. Mowden took full advantage, with Callum Mackenzie cutting a sharp line through the visiting defence to dive over under the posts. Warren Seals converted, but it didn’t take long for Caldy to wipe out DMP’s lead. First Freddie Lockwood saw yellow for the a dangerous tackle, before a penalty try was awarded from a 5m scrum to level the scores. Prop Nathan Rushton then burrowed over for the visitors to give them a 7-14 lead on the eve of half time. Mowden came close to levelling the score soon after but Caldy defended well to retain a 7 point lead at the break.
The second half was largely dominated by the away side, who were clinical in attack to score 4 tries after the break. The first of those came through Adam Aigbokhae who capitalised on a loose ball to dive over. The bonus point try came on the hour mark, when a well worked lineout move saw fellow front rower Oliver Hearn score in the corner. Freddie Lockwood was held up over the line for the hosts, but it was Caldy who scored next to put the result beyond any doubt as the impressive Aigbokhae dotted down for his second of the afternoon. A flurry of late cards then saw Lockwood sent off for a second yellow, before Michael Barlow was also shown yellow for a tip tackle. There was still time for Caldy to round off the afternoon with a well taken try for centre Lucas Titherington, with Ben Jones adding his 4th conversion of the day to complete an emphatic win for the visiting side.
