After getting the better of the early kicking exchanges, Mowden won a series of penalties in the Leeds half inside the opening 10 minutes. Tykes were reduced to 14 when Tom Collins failed to retreat 10 from a quick tap from Euan McKirdy, and Oscar Yandall slotted a penalty soon after to get Mowden on the board. DMP extended their lead soon after, when Joe Craggs was hauled down just short of the line after a break in midfield before the ball was spun out to Ben Frankland to finish well under the posts. Leeds were then restored to 15 as Collins’ sin bin ended, but it didn’t take long for Mowden to edge further ahead. Craggs was heavily involved again, finding Ollie Hodgson with a well timed offload before the DMP skipper was brought down by a high tackle on the 22. Yandall slotted the resulting penalty to make it 0-13 after half an hour. A textbook jackal penalty at the breakdown from Will Jones handed Yandall a chance to extend the lead further, and the fly half obliged to make it 0-16 approaching half time. Leeds responded well, and got an important converted try from Ademakin on the eve of half time. 7-16.
The second half started with Leeds on the front foot, and they narrowed the gap further through a Will Hardwick try. Mowden were reduced to 14 soon after when Craggs was sent to the bin for a high tackle close to the line, and Leeds’ third try through Turagabeci gave them their first lead of the afternoon as the winger dived over in the corner. The hosts continued the enjoy the lions share of the territory, as Mowden struggled to get a foothold in the second half. Hardwick sniped over for his second after 65 minutes to give Leeds a 6 point advantage heading into the final stages. The decisive moment came minutes before full time, with Mowden having an attacking scrum in the Leeds 22. After Hodgson carried up towards the line, it was Talite Vaioleti who burrowed over for the all important try. Leeds had a late chance to snatch victory, but their penalty attempt drifted wide to give Mowden a hard fought win.
