Darlington Mowden Park fell to an agonising last minute defeat on Saturday at Billesley Common, as a late Mason Tonks try denied them an opening day victory.

Moseley opened the scoring with a Ben Palmer inside the opening 10 minutes after a scrum infringement from DMP. The visitors levelled soon after through the boot of Warren Seals, who made no mistake from 40 metres out. Mowden then took the lead minutes later after a well worked backs move. A sharp line from Callum Mackenzie found a hole in the home side's defence, before the centre found Euan McKirdy on a strong supporting line to cross under the posts. Seals converted to give DMP a 3-10 lead. The remainder of the first half saw the hosts enjoy plenty of territory, but Mowden's defence limited them to a brace of Ben Palmer penalties to take a narrow 9-10 lead at the break.

The second 40 saw Mowden fly out of the blocks with a try inside 2 minutes of the restart. Some great work from Will Jones earned the visitors a turnover in the Moseley 22, before replacement prop Josh Crickmay powered over for his side's second try of the afternoon. Seals added the extras once more to extend the lead to 8 points. Mowden then extended their lead further after a powerful driving maul on the right touchline. DMP's driving maul took them inside the Moseley 22, before McKirdy found Talite Vaioleti on the short side to power over in the corner. Seals' conversion attempt drifted narrowly wide, leaving the scores at 9-22. Moseley reacted well, and narrowed the deficit when Aquille Smith gathered a kick through to score out wide. Palmer converted to bring the gap to within a converted score (16-22). Will Jones was then sent to the bin after an incident at the restart, but Mowden's defence held strong in the flanker's absence to retain their 6 point lead. With just seconds left on the clock it was heartbreak for the visitors as Moseley won a turnover on their own 22 and the kick ahead was gathered by Mason Tonks for the match winning try under the posts.

Mowden will be looking to bounce back from Saturday's defeat when they welcome Taunton to the Arena next weekend in a 3pm kick off. Tickets for our home season opener are available to buy online by clicking here.
