MOWDEN PARK 61 - 19 HUDDERSFIELD
Dominant Nine-Try Mowden Park Blow Away Huddersfield in 61-19 Thrashing
On a bright, blustery, early autumn evening at The Darlington Arena, Darlington Mowden Park RFC delivered a stunning attacking masterclass to dispatch Huddersfield RUFC 61-19 in front of 700 enthusiastic supporters.
The home side laid down an early marker, tearing into Huddersfield's defense right from the opening whistle. Winger Liam Checksfield (#14) lit up the right flank early, crossing for a quickfire double at 4 and 12 minutes. Fly-half Junior Newton (#10) was in imperious early form with the boot, converting both to quickly open up a 14-0 lead.
After a somewhat shaky start, Mowden’s forward pack started to assert some dominance in the set-piece and loose play. On 18 minutes, Newton pinpointed a magnificent penalty touch-finder to the Huddersfield 5-meter line. Off the resulting lineout drive, hooker Charlie Turnbull (#2) crashed over for the host's third, with Newton adding the extras to make it 21-0.
Huddersfield regrouped and launched a ten-minute onslaught inside Mowden territory, but the home defense stood firm under immense pressure. Having absorbed the storm, Mowden surged downfield, culminating in a powerful burst from number eight Jacob Oliver to claim the bonus-point try. Newton maintained his perfect kicking record, converting to make it 28-0. However, Newton's mercurial performance came to an unfortunate premature end moments later when he was forced off due to injury.
The loss of their playmaker temporarily halted Mowden’s momentum, allowing Huddersfield to finally break through seven minutes before the interval. Lock Jony Garrity (#4) touched down in the corner for an unconverted last try of the half, sending the sides into the break at 28-5.
The second half opened with a lively tussle as both sides wrestled for territory. Huddersfield struck first when center Tom Hainsworth (#13) crossed the line, with Gareth Widdop (#12) adding the extras to cut the deficit to 28-12 and threaten a comeback.
Mowden’s response, however, was swift and lethal. Just three minutes later, winger Alfie Warwick (#11) finished off a sharp backline movement. Replacement Jonny Royle (#20) stepped up to slot the conversion, pushing the gap out to 35-12. Another three minutes after that, Man of the Match scrum-half Ben Douglas (#9) sliced cleanly through the Huddersfield defensive line, darting under the posts for a solo stunner that Royle comfortably converted (42-12).
Huddersfield refused to yield completely, showing flair out wide to set up winger Lewis Workman (#11) for a well-worked try, again converted by Widdop to make it 42-19.
Yet, any lingering hopes for the traveling supporters were emphatically shattered in a relentless final quarter. Mowden hit full stride, scoring at a rate of a point a minute. Warwick sparked the final charge by tearing over for his second try of the evening to stretch the lead to 47-19.
Ten minutes later, Turnbull mirrored Warwick by claiming his second try of the match following another powerful drive, with center Ewan Greenlaw (#12) slotting the conversion (54-19).
The final flourish belonged to hat-trick hero Warrick, who crashed through for a thunderous finish under the posts. Greenlaw stroked over the simple conversion to seal an emphatic 61-19 victory, sending the Mowden faithful into raptures as the team left the field to resounding applause.
