Mowden show attacking promise but Tigers punish errors in season opener

Darlington Mowden Park left Park Lane with a try-scoring bonus point but were made to pay for a costly error count as relegated Sedgley Park Tigers opened their National Two North campaign with a 47–26 victory.

The final score perhaps disguised some of the encouraging aspects of Mowden’s afternoon. When DMP retained possession and generated quick ball, they repeatedly looked capable of troubling a Sedgley side widely expected to challenge for an immediate return to National One. The visitors scored four tries, three through Ben Douglas, but too many promising passages were ended by an infringement or handling error.

Sedgley were far more ruthless. They scored seven tries and converted six, while neither side kicked a penalty goal — meaning all 73 points came through tries and conversions.

It was an early illustration of the challenge facing Mowden this season: their attacking threat was evident, but against one of the division’s stronger sides, mistakes were punished.

Sedgley came into the fixture following relegation after three seasons in National One and with ambitions of challenging towards the top of National Two North and after a strong pre season, playing and winning all three fixtures, quite the opposite to DMP who had cry-offs in three of their planned friendlies only supported by training sessions v Redbull Academy, Newcastle and Durham Uni.

Sedgley enjoyed the better of the opening exchanges, but Mowden demonstrated glimpses of what they could offer with ball in hand.

The visitors moved possession well, only for a couple of early opportunities to disappear through errors at the breakdown.

Sedgley capitalised at the other end. A penalty gave the hosts an attacking lineout and Alessandro Minozzi supplied the finish for the game’s opening try.

Further Mowden infringements allowed the Tigers to return to the corner, and Minozzi struck again from another close-range opportunity.

At 12–0, DMP needed a response.

It arrived after around 17 minutes.

Mowden finally managed to build their first sustained attack and a break from Ewan Greenlaw opened the home defence. Greenlaw found Ben Douglas, who finished the move to score DMP’s first try of the new campaign.

Williams conversion reduced the deficit to 12–7.

But maintaining possession for prolonged periods proved difficult. Mowden looked dangerous whenever they had the ball, yet attacks repeatedly broke down after only a handful of phases through either a mistake or an infringement.

Sedgley were altogether more clinical.

Minozzi completed his first-half hat-trick, helping the Tigers establish control of the contest.

There were still encouraging defensive moments for DMP. Around the half-hour mark, a superb effort from Greenlaw helped hold a Tigers attacker up and temporarily kept Sedgley out.

But the pressure kept coming.

Another infringement pinned Mowden near their own line before Sedgley eventually forced their way across, stretching their advantage further.

A late break from Douglas almost produced a second DMP score before half-time, but the opportunity was turned over close to the Tigers’ line.

By the interval Sedgley had established a commanding 26–7 advantage.

Any hopes of a measured DMP fightback suffered an immediate blow after the restart. Barely a minute into the second half, Sedgley worked their way upfield and a kick towards the Mowden five-metre area caused problems. The Mowden lineout ended up in Tigers hands and the hosts crossed again.

At 33–7, Mowden faced a formidable task.

Yet their response demonstrated the attacking ability that had flickered throughout the first half. A powerful carry and break from Liam Checksfield punched a hole in the Sedgley defence before the ball found Douglas. The scrum half finished for his second try of the afternoon.

Although the conversion was missed, Mowden were back on the scoreboard at 33–12.

Sedgley infringements subsequently gave DMP more possession and territory, and the visitors began to enjoy one of their most productive spells of the match.

Around the 50-minute mark, a no-arms tackle on Gary Graham was missed by the officials which resulted in Gary leaving the field, lets hope its not too serious having only just arrived at the club.

Josh Oppong made a huge break from the halfway line into the 22m only to be tackled just short, Tigers infringed at the ruck preventing a certain try which resulted in a yellow card.

Mowden exploited the numerical advantage.
With the Tigers reduced to 14, DMP attacked from the resulting quick tap Harrison Wood powered over. The conversion was added and suddenly the score stood at 40–19.

There was still a considerable deficit to overcome, but DMP had demonstrated they could hurt their hosts when they were able to establish territory and retain possession.

Sedgley managed the middle section of the second half intelligently, slowing proceedings and denying Mowden the sustained momentum they needed.

A scrum close to the DMP line eventually provided the platform for another Tigers score around the hour mark, taking the game beyond Mowden’s realistic reach.

But the visitors refused to disappear. With approximately seven minutes remaining, a sequence of Sedgley penalties and quick DMP possession presented another attacking opportunity. Again, Ben Douglas was the man to finish it.

The scrum half crossed for his hat-trick, with the conversion making it 47–26 and, importantly, securing Mowden a four-try bonus point.

A mistake from the restart briefly put DMP back under pressure, but both sides traded errors in the closing stages before Sedgley completed their seven-try victory.

The scoreboard makes uncomfortable reading, but there was more to Mowden’s performance than a 21-point defeat suggests.

Sedgley’s victory leaves them second after Round One, while Mowden sit 11th with their bonus point.

For DMP, attention now turns to another substantial challenge — an away North-East encounter with Tynedale on Saturday 12 September.
