Three first half tries from Mowden No. 8 Simon UZOKWE, ultimately proved too much for home side Billingham, as their attempt to redress a first deficit of 7 – 26 failed despite a spirited comeback.
Mowden scored three converted tries without reply, stunning the home side and stifling a normally vociferous crowd.
UZOKWE powered his way over the whitewash, after some decent forward play (0 – 5), with Flynn WARD converting well (0 – 7).
Five minutes later after further pressure was exerted on Billingham, his back row colleague Jacob BUTTERILL followed suit (0 – 12) and with FLYNN adding the extras (0 – 14), the home side had barely touched the ball.
More of the same followed for Mowden, when UZOKWE grabbed his brace, again powering his way through a floundering home defence to score (0 – 19), again FLYNN successful with the afters (0 – 21)
Billingham just could not get into the game, as Mowden dominated every phase and looked like running away with the game at this stage.
Home winger ROSS halted Mowden’s progress, with a well taken try (5 – 21), converted by the hard-working centre and skipper WILSON (7 – 21)
Despite that brief setback, first half dominance was re-established, UZOKWE making another powerful run to the home line (7 – 26), as the whistle for oranges arrived.
Indiscipline and a some uncharacteristically sloppy play crept into the visitor’s game in the third quarter of the game, allowing a more determined Billingham side into the game, with first an unconverted try by KIRKBRIDE (12 – 26), followed by another from home No. 8 Jackson (17 – 26), converted by WILSON (19 – 26), as the game entered the final quarter.
Dominance was re-established for Mowden, first from a WARD penalty, as the home side were deemed offside (19 – 29), followed by a penalty try, when Billingham were adjudged to have prevented a scoring opportunity for Mowden, the defender tackling Mowden replacement Reuben DYER, prior to him capitalising on a superb kick-through to the line (19 – 36).
Billingham grabbed a consolation try by prop CLARK, converted by WILSON (26 – 36), to grab a well-deserved bonus point.
All in all, another 5 points to Mowden, who look forward to a home clash next week with visitor’s Otley RFC at the Arena!
