Mowden Park took 2 bonus points from their opening game of 2024 after an agonising late defeat at Cinderford.

DMP had led 3-15 at half time, before a strong second half comeback from the hosts saw them clinch a last minute win.

After a kit mix up Mowden ran out in Cinderford’s white change strip, but the unfamiliar colours didn’t seem to affect Garry Law’s side as they ran in three first half tries. After an early penalty from Joe Winfield put Cinderford ahead, Mowden took the lead when Harry Yates finished a flowing team move after a well time pass from Josh Ree. Mowden’s second try came soon after, when Charlie Smith latched onto a deft chip from Callum Pascoe under penalty advantage to score in the corner. Things got even better for Mowden when Smith got his second of the afternoon, before Ben Frankland was sent to the bin shortly before half time. Mowden’s defence held firm however, and went into the break with a 12 point lead.

Cinderford started the second half strongly, and they were awarded a penalty try after a series of scrum penalties on the DMP 5m line. Carl Guest was shown yellow, but again Mowden defended well with 14 to hold Cinderford at bay. In fact Mowden almost had their bonus point try when Ree dived over, but the fullback was adjudged to have a foot in touch in the act of scoring. DMP were soon restored to 15 men, but Cinderford took the lead minutes later when Will Baldwin dived over in the corner and Winfield converted well from out wide. A Garry Law penalty edged Mowden ahead, with Callum Pascoe sniping over soon after for the bonus point try. The conversion drifted wide, leaving DMP 6 points ahead going into the final minutes. Cinderford finished strongly though, and a late converted try for Joe Mullis denied Mowden a hard fought away win.

Will Jones was DMP's Man of the Match after a typically dynamic performance, with winger Obi Ene also impressing off the bench on debut.

Mowden now return to the Arena on Saturday when they take on Blackheath in Round 16. Tickets are available to buy online by clicking here.
