Moseley Edge Tight Contest at the Arena

DMP Admin16 Oct 2023 - 14:39

Darlington Mowden Park were denied the win on Saturday after a last minute penalty for visitors Birmingham Moseley.

After losing Callum Mackenzie to injury in the warm up, Mowden were dealt an early blow when fly half Tighe Maxwell-Whiteley opened the scoring inside the first 5 minutes. DMP responded well, and Callum Pascoe sniped over from close range minutes later. Moseley restored their lead when Pat Zindi dived over after a driving maul, an area that proved to be a strength for the visitors. An Ollie Walker try brought Mowden within 2, before a Josh Ree penalty edged the hosts in front. Another penalty for Maxwell-Whiteley saw the visitors lead 15-17 at the break.

Moseley started the second half strongly, as their driving maul continued to pay dividends. A further penalty from Maxwell-Whiteley and a try from captain Ollie Stedman saw the lead grow to 10 heading into the final quarter. The visitors' penalty count had been racking up, and they were reduced to 13 after two quickfire yellow cards for repeated infringements. Mowden took full advantage, with Harry Yates crashing over out wide. Garry Law converted brilliantly from the left touchline, narrowing the gap to 3. Moseley were still reduced in numbers, and DMP's bonus point try followed when Yaree Fantini scythed through the visiting defence to dot down. A missed conversion left the gap at 2, and Moseley pushed hard for a late score back to 15 men. Mowden thought they'd won it when a late knock on handed them a scrum, but the ball came loose and a late penalty saw victory slip from their grasp.

The league now heads into a 2 week break, before Mowden travel to Rams in Round 8.
