A memorable night at the Darlington Arena saw Mowden take a bonus point win in front of a record crowd. Over 2,000 supporters flocked to the Arena as DMP ran in 4 tries in an entertaining win in Round 8.
It was the visitors who opened the scoring early on through a Tighe Maxwell-Whiteley penalty after an error-strewn opening 10 minutes. Mowden's reply was instant however, with Callum Mackenzie chasing down a loose ball before Matt Minogue finished well out wide. The Australian converted his own score, before the Tykes hit back with a try from the driving maul. A Minogue penalty edged DMP ahead once more, and the home side continued to grow into the game as the half progressed. The lead grew shortly before the break, with Mowden's 10 heavily involved again. Minogue made a break in the Tykes half, before offloading to Morgan Passman who did the rest from 30m out breaking a host of tackles in the process. The conversion stretched the advantage to 17-8 at the break.
DMP picked up where they left off in the first half, with Minogue crossing for his second after charging down Maxwell-Whiteley's clearing kick. The bonus point was wrapped up soon after, with Max Davies barging over from close range. At this point Mowden looked comfortable, making line breaks at will much to the delight of the bumper home crowd. Despite pressing for their fifth of the evening, it was the visitors who enjoyed a purple patch to finish the stronger of the two sides. Late tries from Kieran Davies and Charlie Venables saw them close the gap to 8, but Mowden held their nerve to see out an important win.
Alfie Barron was awarded Man of the Match honours after a tireless performance, and DMP will take great positives from an impressive home victory. Mowden now make the long trip to Plymouth next weekend, before returning to the Arena on Saturday 12th November against Taunton.
A massive thank you to everyone who turned out to support us on Friday evening, we hope to see you back at the Arena soon!
