Jess Cooksey Signs Up For 2019/20 Sharks Season

I'm really excited about playing for a new club and seeing what DMP has to offer. I'm looking forward to being part of a hard working team who are committed to playing the best rugby they can.

Darlington Mowden Park Sharks are pleased to confirm the signing of Jess Cooksey from Gloucester-Hartpury. Cooksey will join up with her new teammates shortly as the Sharks continue their preparations for the 2019/20 Tyrrells Premier 15s season.

The 17 year-old back brings a wealth of national age group experience, having represented England U18s and Great Britain Sevens. Ahead of her move to the North East, Cooksey commented: "I'm really excited about playing for a new club and seeing what DMP has to offer. I'm looking forward to being part of a hard working team who are committed to playing the best rugby they can. I can't wait to make new teammates and play some great rugby at such a high level, it’s definitely an experience I'm grateful to be a part of.”

Cooksey also brings a level of versatility to the DMP backline, having covered both full back and the centres in her time with Gloucester-Hartpury. The young back will combine her playing time with a degree at partners Durham University next season. Asked about her motivations for joining the Sharks, she added: “I've chosen to study my undergraduate course at Durham University, and a massive part of that decision was based on the proximity to a Tyrrells Premier 15s club. The opportunity to attend an excellent University with a Premier 15s team so close by made my decision simple.”

Cooksey becomes the Sharks second new signing of the summer, and she was looking forward to getting started in the 2019/20 season: “My goals for next season are based on establishing myself within the Sharks squad and aiming for England U20's selection.”

Sharks Head of Programme Justin Loveridge was equally pleased with the latest addition to his playing squad: “We’re delighted to be adding another young, exciting player to our growing squad. After watching Jess play for England U18s against Scotland earlier this year, I could see how well she would fit into our existing group of players and I’m sure she’ll add further attacking threat to our backline. We look forward to having her on board as she continues her development as a player.”
