Roland's Ride 2021 - Sunday 12th September

Tom Bulmer26 May 2021 - 10:00

Roland’s Ride is a non-competitive charity cycling event with alternative routes, starting and finishing at the Darlington Arena.

After having to cancel last years event, Darlington Mowden Park R.F.C and SG Petch have teamed up again to organise three more bike rides to raise funds for the Motor Neurone Disease Association.

The rides will take place on Sunday 12th September 2021 starting and finishing at the Darlington Arena.

Entry is £25 per rider with 100% of the proceeds going to the charity.

The idea was the brainchild of Peter Rees, an SG Petch customer and Mowden member whose friend Roland was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease (MND) in 2018. Roland was a keen cyclist but unfortunately his physical condition swiftly deteriorated, to such an extent that he could no longer enjoy these outdoor pursuits.

Sadly the disease took its inevitable course and he passed away in July 2019.

The alternative rides are:

Social Ride – This will be approx. 50km in length and is designed primarily for the less experienced rider and those who are seeking a moderately challenging day out. The ride has been routed to pass at least one café and a number of pubs.

Elite Ride – This will be approx. 100km in length and is designed for the experienced rider seeking a more challenging day out. The ride includes a number of short climbs and, like the Social Ride, is routed to pass cafes and pubs.

King of the Mountains Loop – This is an additional, more challenging route that can be added to the Elite Ride. It will take the rider into the Cleveland Hills and includes a number of strenuous hill climbs. The overall ride length of the Elite Ride and King of the Mountains Loop will be approximately 130km.
