Mowden take a bonus point from defeat at Brickfields.

A late Freddie Lockwood try saw Mowden take a 4 try bonus point from their trip to Devon on Saturday in testing conditions. The hosts ran in 7 tries, four of which came from hooker Max Norey, on a day when the scoring was dominated by the forwards.

Plymouth set their stall out early and opened the scoring with a well worked lineout try for Norey on 4 minutes. Playing into a strong wind in the first half, Mowden responded well as Ralph Appleby dived over from the back of a driving maul to level the scores. A well worked backs move saw the hosts restore their lead, before a brace of Connor Eastgate penalties extended their advantage to 18-5. The strong wind made it difficult for Mowden to gain any territory, and Albion continued with their catch and drive game when Norey dotted down his second of the afternoon soon after to stretch the gap to 20 points. Mowden lock Dave Fisher was sent to the bin on the eve of half time after a series of penalties against the visitors – 25-5 at the break.

The second half started well for Mowden, as the away side showed the strength of their own driving maul when Joe Craggs dived over in the corner. Freddie Lockwood was then shown yellow for a tip tackle, before two quickfire tries from driving mauls extended the Plymouth lead even further. Things got worse for the visitors on the hour mark when Liam Checksfield became the third Mowden player to see yellow, this time for a deliberate knock on despite a clear forward pass from the hosts. Norey then crossed for his fourth of the afternoon, before Mowden scored the try of the match through Paul Jarvis. Clean lineout ball saw Freddie Lockwood bounce off 2 tacklers in midfield, before the ball was worked wide to Jarvis to finish well under pressure in the corner. Home winger Shea Cornish then dotted down his side’s seventh of the afternoon, leaving Mowden 10 minutes to go in search of the 4 try bonus point. Relentless pressure on the Plymouth line saw 2 Albion forwards sent to the bin, before Lockwood crashed over to rescue a hard earned point from Mowden’s longest away trip of the season.

Mowden will now look to bounce back on Saturday when they host Cinderford in a 3pm kick off. Tickets for Saturday’s game are available to buy online by clicking here.
