For the second time in as many weeks DMP held on for a nervy victory to further distance themselves from the National One relegation battle. Garry Law's side ran in 4 tries to claim maximum points, despite TJs spurning a late chance to snatch the victory.
The game started with both sides looking to run the ball from deep on a glorious day in the North East. The visitors opened the scoring through a Tom White penalty, and looked likely to extend their lead with a 5m lineout soon after. The ball was knocked on however, and after a brilliant break from full back Chris McTurk, Ollie Walker scampered over for DMP's first try of the afternoon. Oscar Yandall added the extras, before Tonbridge's driving maul saw them retake the lead through hooker Ryan Jackson. The away side had arguably got the better of the opening quarter, but the rest of the first half was largely dominated by Mowden. First Euan McKirdy darted over from a quick tap for his 10th try of the season, before Max Davies broke through the middle to gallop over from Mowden's third try on the eve of half time. 17-8.
In similar fashion to last weekend's trip to Leeds, the second half saw Mowden's opposition get themselves back into the game, and take a lead that looked unlikely at the break. The strength of their driving maul was apparent once again on 47 minutes, as Bobby Bratton powered over from close range. After a series of knock ons in midfield they then took the lead through replacement Kyle McGhie, giving TJs a 3 point advantage heading into the final quarter. The visitors had chanced to extend that lead, but vital turnovers from Will Jones and Euan McKirdy kept DMP in the game. Mowden then took full advantage, as George Shannon dotted down off the back of a powerful driving maul to put his side 22-20 in front. A nervy final 5 minutes saw TJs work their way into the 22, but Harvey Young was unable to convert a late penalty as Mowden clung on for the second weekend in a row.
Mowden now enjoy a rest weekend, before returning to the Arena on Saturday 9th April when they take on Plymouth in a 3pm kick off.
