As the 2024/25 season comes to a close, the DMP Elizabethans' journey in Durham & Northumberland Division 2 draws to an end. It’s been a season of highs and lows, grit and grind, and while the final result may not have been what we hoped for, the spirit of the Elizabethans remains as strong as ever.
The season began with a burst of optimism and momentum, securing two impressive home victories against Ashington and Blyth. The squad showed early signs of cohesion and firepower, exciting supporters with the prospect of a successful campaign ahead. However, as the weeks progressed, the challenges began to mount.
Injuries and unavailability plagued the team far beyond what anyone could have predicted. With key players sidelined and frequent reshuffling of the squad, consistency proved elusive. Yet through every setback, the lads never stopped battling. They dug deep, played for each other, and fought tooth and nail for every point on the board. It hasn’t been an easy ride—but as the saying goes, nothing worth fighting for ever is.
Among the season's standout moments, we are proud to congratulate Elizabethans Vice Captain Marcus Hunton on his well-earned step up to the DMP 1st XV. Marcus has been a true leader on and off the field, and his relentless commitment to the club is something we all deeply admire. His promotion is richly deserved and a sign of the talent that continues to grow within our ranks.
We also celebrated the return of club stalwart Dave Turner, who rejoined the fold earlier this year after time away due to work commitments. Having Dave back in the front row has been a huge boost—not just for our scrummaging strength, but for the spirit and experience he brings to the squad. His absence was certainly felt, and his return warmly welcomed.
Another bright spark this year has been the emergence of several Colts stepping up to senior rugby. Their performances have been nothing short of impressive, showing composure beyond their years and offering a glimpse into the club’s promising future. With this new wave of talent coming through, the foundations are strong for a bounce back.
Our Elizabethans Sponsors Day on March 8th was a success, with a brilliant turnout, great atmosphere and 2 thrilling games of rugby from our 1st & 2nd XVs as we celebrated the people and businesses that make what we do possible. We’re incredibly thankful to all who attended and showed their support.
We also took a big step forward in improving the club’s facilities, working in partnership with GRK Civils and Advanced Fire and Safety for the erection of fencing around our back pitches—which now proudly display our sponsor advertising boards. This has been a brilliant addition to the club, and we’re excited about how it enhances both our image and our infrastructure.
After hearing about the highs of the season, there always has to come the lows, and despite all the efforts and the heart shown week in and week out, the season concludes with the Elizabethans facing relegation to Durham & Northumberland 3 for the 2025/26 campaign. While it’s a tough pill to swallow, we choose to view it not as a setback, but as a turning point. This is our moment to rest, regroup, rebuild, and return stronger, hungrier, and ready to get back to winning ways.
We would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to our sponsors for their continued support throughout this challenging year—your backing means everything. And to our loyal supporters, whether you stood on the sidelines or shared a post-match pint, your presence has kept the spirit of the club alive.
Here’s to the end of a tough season, and the beginning of something new. #MowdenFamily
