A low scoring game played in heavy fog saw Bishop’s Stortford run out 13-6 winners on Saturday in Round 12 of the National One season. Alex Rayment’s first half try proved to be the difference between the two sides, on a frustrating afternoon for Garry Law’s side.

Rayment’s early try came after just 3 minutes, with the hooker spotting a gap on the blindside to dive over in the corner for the only try of the game. Mowden responded well, but were dealt an unfortunate blow when Yaree Fantini was taken off injured after a midfield break. Fraizer Kiff was shown yellow for the incident, before Corben Ollivent slotted the resulting penalty to get DMP on the board. Mowden were unable to take advantage of their extra man, with Matt Riddington adding a penalty to restore Stortford’s 7 point lead. Mowden came close to levelling the scores after a break from Nathan Greenwood, but the hosts’ defence held firm to maintain a 10-3 lead at the break.

With conditions worsening at Silver Leys the second half was an even tighter affair, with Riddington adding a penalty to edge Stortford further clear. Mowden had the better of the second half territory, but were unable to break down a stubborn home defence. DMP camped themselves in the Stortford half for long periods, and eventually narrowed the gap to 7 with another penalty from Ollivent to set up a nervy final 10 for the hosts. Mowden pressed for a late try to salvage a draw, but a knock on ended the game and DMP were forced to settle for a single point in defeat.

Mowden will now look to bounce back when they return to the Darlington Arena for back to back home games against Leicester Lions and Sale FC. Tickets for this weekend’s Round 13 clash are available to buy online by clicking here.
