We had a grand day out at Westoe on Sunday. Fielding 2 sides and an expeditionary force that went to Horden in search of a porthole to pitch D. Commander Sharp gaining the Mark Thatcher award for navigation. Both our teams played fantastic rugby with some awesome individual efforts.
Sunday 6 Oct we were away for the first festival of the season at Westoe Rugby Club. The weather was fine the last throws of summer and Suzanne Westoe’s coach had done a great job of laying out pitches and allocating groups of teams to play each other. We fielded two sides the first 8 players to arrive became the White team and played opposition on pitch A while the rest formed the Blue team and played on pitch D next to them.
Debutants Adam Tonkin and Alfie King stepped up for their first game with Whites and played with courage and enthusiasm taking on bigger opponents winning the ball, gaining ground and grining. George Hardy stood his ground tackling allcomers and passing the ball safely away from contact to launch our attacks. Ben Lear made probing runs passing the ball fluidly to keep our attacks going. Jack Hornsby always first to the scrum and ready to drive in and help going forward or back. At the centre of the field Dylan Barton led by example tacking consistently and charging through with our ball. While Dan Furphy was tireless and relentless in giving the opposition no mercy. Eoghann kept his position on the wing making his channel of the pitch “Fortress Furness” tackling and driving back opponents who fancied their chances winning the ball and running right back at them. The team gave a good display and deserved more wins which from the spirit shown in the last game will surely come.
The Blues on pitch D can hold their head high undefeated this season Sam Medcalf commanded the centre of the field crunching tackles and driving the oppos back at the ruck and maul; with the ball confidently in one hand he was awesome. James Peart stopped any attacks from the opposition scrums dominating their scrum halves spoiling and winning the ball at their put in and linking in on the offensive to keep our attacks going on. Tom McCue made some huge runs to score and tackled solidly. Mathew Race kept our attacks moving passing the ball and holding his ground under attack. Tom Tuer there in the right place at the right time diving over to score and making cleverly angled runs. Oscar Black was fundamental in containing the opposition at the ruck and maul driving them away or hugging them till we got the ball. The Blues performance showed much for DMPRUFC to be proud of.
