On Sunday 26 February, DMP U16's hosted Billingham U16's in the County Cup Semi Final, which would see the winners of the contest progressing through to the final to face Stockton U16's. As per previous matches between these two strong teams, it was envisaged to be a highly fought contest and the game did not disappoint.
From the kick off, both teams heavily contested possession of the ball which allowed the fowards of both teams to try and dominate the breakdown. This flex of strength by both teams resulted in some wonderful pick ups and numerous attempts to drive for the try lines, however, both teams stood firm in defense and the only points coming within the first quarter of the game was from a Mowden penalty. as the game edged towards to 30 minut mark, following some wonderful attacking play by Mowden equalled by some wonderful support by the team, Mowden were soon able to cross the Billingham try line and following a sucessful conversion, Mowden were now up 10 points, with Billingham still to score.
Upon the second half commencing, it was too close to call as to which team would eventually win the game and his half followed suit from the previous 35 minutes with both teams producing some wonderful attacking play, however, only the superb defensive efforts by Mowden stopped Billingham getting on the score board. Having camped on the Mowden 5 meter line, Billingham continued to try and find a way through a solid Mowden defence and even after crossing the Mowden try line on occasions, the ball was quickly held up by Mowden bodies resulting in further scrums to Billingham.
As the game was edging towards the final whistle, Mowden continued applying pressure on Billingham which rewarded them another try and another 5 points on the score sheet. As the referee blew for full time, Mowden had secured the win but Billingham had made them work for it throughout the game. Final score Mowden 15 - 0 Billingham.
Thankyou to all tthose people that attended the game to support both teams.
