Narrow Victory over well drilled Penrith RFC

A much changed line up saw the debut for a number of new players, as DMP played hosts to Penrith RFC.

DMP looked to make another bright start, an early opportunity fell to Alasdair Cunningham with a well angled run opening up the visitors defence, alas the door was firmly shut in his face as he stepped back, inside ignoring the support on the outside.

The early promise quickly faded as Penrith pushed deep into DMP territory, poor handling handed the visitors possession. DMP continued to drift in towards the play, exposing the backs to overlapping runs from an energised Penrith team. In quick succession, Jack Wears was all that stood between Penrith and the Mowden try line - driving his opposite number back and retrieving the loose ball, followed by another crunching tackle moments later to deny Penrith the points.

Penrith looked hungry, Mowdens defence ragged at best, our forwards nowhere to be seen as they "jogged" around the pitch. An injury to one of Penriths' flankers allowing the team to regroup and take instruction from the coaches.

21 minutes into the half, and DMP were certainly second best as the coaches continued to call for change - Kieran Hogg the one player looking full of running & tackles. Handbags at dawn, as some heated exchanges ensued from a couple of tasty scrums - Penrith hungry for it. Mowden delivered a sucker punch, after being under pressure for the first 25 minutes, a series of pick & go's opened up an opportunity - Alasdair Cunningham breaking clear to score in the corner. Jack Hudson striking the left upright as the ball bounced back denying the bonus points.

26 mins: 5 - 0

Penrith continued to push hard and dominated play, DMP dogged in defence with some well placed clearance kicks from the reliable boot of jack Hudson. Jake Gardiner was imperious in the lineout and his work around the Rucks & Mauls second to none. It was Penrith who finished the brighter who pushed all the way until the half time whistle.

Half Time: 5 - 0

DMP rang the changes with a flurry substitutions - but it was Penrith who started the brighter. 5 minutes in, and the scores were level - Oliver May proving to be continuous threat.

40 mins: 5 -5

The score was a fair reflection if anything Penrith were unlucky not to be ahead. Daniel Hope looked to energise the forwards, along with Nathan Newton, but it was a lineout with a cleanly collected ball allowed the forwards to put a driving maul into action, 20m's made before Alasdair Cunningham broke to restore DMP's lead.

48 mins: 10 - 5

The lead lasted only a few minutes as Penrith once again piled on the pressure, first narrowly missing out as the ball was grounded - a 22 drop out the result - the visitors turned the screw with the resultant attack, slipping past a number of players with ease Penrith levelled the score again.

51 mins: 10-10

Cunningham, Hogg, Hanmer & Lanagan combined to gain ground. The forwards then drew in the home defence, as Jack Hudson dived over the top like a NFL running back - conversions were hard to come by as Sam Anderson sliced his kick.

56 mins: 15 - 10

A rare moment of invention saw Will Lanagan slip his opposite number tight on the wing, sprinting half the length of the field - off loaded, then received the return pass - surely a try...........yes...no - tackled as he looked to ground the ball - no try!

Penrith failed to clear their lines, a line out and another great catch - a driving maul from 20m out - Andy Bain managing the juggernaught before peeling off the back to score. Another difficult kick from wide on the right failed to convert.

66 mins: 20 - 10

Mowden managed the clock well in the last few minutes - Dell calling the defence to greater efforts. Matthew Hanmer setting off on one of his rangy runs before the referee called time, and a hugely competitive game was brought to a close.

Full Time 20:10

Penrith pushed for the full 70 minutes, contributing to an entertaining match - we wish them every success in their own County Cup Semi Final in the next few weeks. Outstanding player for Penrith today - Oliver May

DMP failed to reach the heights of last weeks victory over Durham, but still a good result. great to also see new players make their debuts.

As for the man of the match........todays reciepient is always told not to kick the ball - but he does, could start a fight in an empty room, loves chatting to the referees, often finds himself out of position, ignores supporting players, but is as enigmatic a player you could wish for, our very own.....................

Alasdair Cunningham - well deserved
