West Hartlepool vs Mowden (Sunday 27/SEP)
After two fantastic opening games, an injury and virus ravaged team took to the field, for an encounter which has always proved physical in the past. A patched up team saw MatthewM moving to centres and having a great game (so good in fact he was the back of the match).
With HarryP having to come off after a few minutes, this left gaps on the wing which West’s duly exposed. Although the Mowden forwards were winning plenty of ball and the backs were working hard, we never seemed to have the ball long enough to string an attack together.
Finally from a long lineout through Wests ran around the team to open the scoring. While Mowden stuck to the task, suicidal decisions either meant handing the ball back to Wests or not moving far enough up the pitch. A strange free kick resulted in West’s running in another try.
While everyone worked hard, the hole created by the substitute winger (from West’s) meant this was always a training game but Mowden were very unlucky in the last few plays not to score and all credit to West’s for holding the line. We look forward to the rematch with a full squad this will prove to be a sterner test for West’s.
