‘Funny old game isn’t it’
Just when we thought that we’d turned the corner with a decent performance against the league leaders last week, we’re brought back down to earth with a contrasting dismal display against a workman-like Penrith RFC who deserved their home win.
Things started poorly well before the kick off when the club was let down by the coach company, which resulted in cars being the order of the day and that can never be the best of starts.
However, the fragmented start to the day seemed initially to have been largely forgotten, as we started the game brightly enough with a try early on by Matt LISTER, after good incisive work by Rob EATOUGH.
At that time connections thought that the day would be a good one, but soon and inexplicably, what started off brightly, began to ebb away and turn into the worst performance of the season so far with a final score of 45 – 17 to the home side.
We did, as ever, create scoring opportunities other than our three tries, but individual errors again proved costly in the red zone and when that happens, you simply can’t expect to win in this league.
The ship, which so often this season has stood firm and repelled most boarders, leaked in six tries, through missed tackles and so many defensive frailties that it is probably prudent just to shut up and accept the fact that hopefully these days don’t come around too often. Perhaps other than good individual performances from skipper Howie MURRAY and Rob EATOUGH, the others certainly need to make up for their poor showing in the games ahead.
Credit to Penrith RFC, they probably played their usual game, as they do week in week out and on this occasion found us on an off day and quite rightly took full advantage.
