In heat wave type conditions, DMPRFC eventually overcame Birkenhead Park RFC with a blistering ten minute purple patch after oranges which undid the visitors.
DMPRFC started the brighter, when after only two minutes on the clock, Chris PEACE cut a line through the middle of the visiting defence and scored under the posts. Grant CONNON converting.(7 – 0)
Birkenhead Park exerted decent pressure of their own and after some inter-passing in midfield, their No.8 scored a try wide out.
Honours were fairly even at this stage with both teams testing each others defences and defences holding up strongly.
Birkenhead Park added a penalty to their tally just prior to oranges, when the home defence transgressed in midfield. (7 – 8)
As oranges came and went, DMPRFC upped the pace and it told on the visitors, as in a ten minute period, the home team racked up 21 unanswered points.
Grant CONNON scored the first try after the break, scything his way under the posts after good interplay in midfield created the gap. The conversion was easy for him. (14 – 8)
An injury to full back Paul SHEPHERD necessitated a replacement in the form of Max CONNON, who took the field to join his brother in the backline and it was the replacement who hacked on and chased the kick to touch down in a foot race with the visiting defence, His brother Grant adding the conversion. (21 – 8)
Flanker Luke WISHNOWSKY, who had tackled fearlessly throughout managed to score a try himself, after a series of pick and drives was rewarded and he came out with the ball to crash over. Again the conversion was easy for Grant CONNON. (28 – 8)
All in all, a decent result against a team who had previously had success themselves and who are historically tough opponents.
