Taking nothing away from Chester, they played very well and have a decent set of forwards, who paved the way for their eventual victory, with a good display against the home pack.
It all started off reasonably well for the home side, when after six minutes, two well struck penalties by fly half debutant Grant CONNON put DMPRFC in front, as Chester persistently infringed. (6 – 0)
Both sides tested their respective opposition’s defences at this stage and Chester responded with a penalty of their own, as the home side infringed similarly. (6 - 3)
Chester scored the remainder of their points during a fifteen minute period prior to oranges, with two tries and a conversion, as DMPRFC lacked control and lapsed in concentration. ( H.T. 6 – 15)
During this period, a backs moved by the home team, which would have been the play of the game, was adjudged to have contained a forward pass by the official, who was ably assisted, or perhaps distracted, by a Chester player acting as referee’s assistant, furiously flagging.
After oranges, play was monopolised by DMPRFC who tried to redress the score, with a series of attacks in the visitor’s ‘red zone’. However, on several occasions a mixture of frustration and good defence prevented any try scoring opportunities.
A solitary penalty by Grant CONNON was all that DMPRFC had to show for their efforts. (9 - 15)
Chester did seek opportunities themselves, but none with the conviction of their first half performance, which ultimately won them the game.
DMPRFC hinted the possibility of a break away score to steal the game at the end, but again a forward pass destroyed that and in any case that would have been harsh on Chester who deserved their victory.
DMPRFC also deserved their bonus point against a team who others will find difficult to handle in the coming weeks.
Plenty to work on then for DMPRFC in the week ahead, as a trip to the sloping pitch of Sandal RFC lies ahead at the weekend.
