A comprehensive collective display from DMPRFC at the Northern Echo Arena, saw off the challenge of visitors Richmond RFC.

A comprehensive collective display from DMPRFC at the Northern Echo Arena, saw off the challenge of visitors Richmond RFC.

The manner of the victory showed glimpses of the rugby that DMPRFC are capable of, scoring six tries and gaining a valuable five league points.

After a sluggish start, which saw Richmond out of the blocks early, scoring a good try via their industrious inside centre after five minutes of play (0 - 5), DMPRFC took a stranglehold on the game and rarely looked in danger.

The cause wasn't helped when hooker Charlie MADDISON was sent to the sin bin after a flare up in the thirteenth minute, but it was DMPRFC who appeared to profit, when prop Matty SHIELDS burst through to score under the posts after Richmond lost the ball in their own 22, which was picked up by skipper Cameron MITCHELL, on to Grant CONNON, who found SHIELDS in support (5 - 5). CONNON was successful with any easy conversion (7 - 5).

Flanker Callum MACKENZIE was next to contribute 5 minutes later, when after a penalty was kicked to the corner, he latched on to the resulting catch and drive maul, dotting down wide out (12 - 5).

Fly half Grant CONNON took advantage of some indiscipline in the Richmond defence, slotting a penalty after the visitors had been penalised for not releasing in the tackle, for which the visiting skipper was yellow carded (15 - 5).

With DMPRFC back to strength, they took advantage of Richmond's numerical disadvantage, with CONNON himself scoring a try, after good initial work from No.8 Guy van den DRIES from the base of the scrum and his back row partner Joe MAUD, allowing CONNON an opportunity to find a gap in the visitors defence for the score (20 - 5). CONNON made no mistake with the afters (22 - 5).

As the break for oranges arrived, the large crowd applauded loudly the efforts of their players, with more of the same keenly anticipated on resumption of play.

After the break, DMPRFC nearly score in the first minute, but ended up losing the ball, allowing Richmond to break themselves and only good defence prevented anything coming of the visitors reply.

To be fair to Richmond, they did attempt to crank it up after the break, making incursions into the home 22 on several occasions, however they found a resolute home defence who repelled such incursions and snuffed out any danger.

As the game entered the final quarter, centre Tom HODGSON orchestrated a gap in the Richmond defence, gliding through for the try bonus point (27 - 5). Again CONNON converting (29 - 5).

With the game secure, it was only a matter of whether DMPRFC could add more points to the total and this they did with two tries from full back Henry ROBINSON. The first of his brace came after a DMPRFC attack took the Richmond defence wide right, before attacking left and ROBINSON avoiding the defence to score wide on the left (34 - 5). Again CONNON converting (36 - 5). His second try resulted from a length of the field break, involving several DMPRFC players, with ROBINSON finishing off wide left (41 - 5). This time Tom HODGSON was succesful with an excellent conversion from the touchline (43 - 5).

Richmond came alive in the last minutes of the game to score a good consolation try via their hard working No. 8 (43 - 10), which was converted by their fly half and skipper (43 - 12), but the day deservedly belonged to the home side.
