In a sweltering 32 degree heat, a DMPRFC squad acquitted themselves well against Old Albanians RFC, a new National League One, courtesy of promotion as Champions last season, from National League Two (South) at their impressive Woollam’s Playing Fields HQ.
In fact, despite the 5 hour journey, it was DMPRFC who started the brighter, stunning their hosts after 3 minutes with a try by Max CONNON, converted by brother Grant.
Old Albanians were stung into action themselves and showed their quality, with their big runners, few mistakes and good support of the ball carrier. They scored three tries themselves before Sean McCARTNEY crossed the whitewash, with DMPRFC in the frame at oranges with the scoreline of 17 – 12 to the hosts.
In the second half, Old Albanians gained the upperhand, threatening to ease away, but not to be denied, Josh HALL responded with a try and with the result at 36 – 19, the trip for DMPRFC had, had the desired effect, in a valuable test against decent higher opposition, ahead of the start of the league season in two weeks.
An overnight stay in St. Albans provided the squad with some reward for their efforts
