DMP Sharks have confirmed their leadership group for the upcoming 2019/20 Tyrrells Premier 15s season. Mackenzie Thomas has been named club captain, and she will be supported by co-captains Heather Kerr, Lisa Cockburn, Sarah Law and George Roberts.

Canadian full back Thomas will take on the captaincy for the first time this season, having made 10 league appearances last year. Asked about taking on the role for the first time, Thomas said: “It came as a bit of a shock to be asked if I would be Sharks Club Captain this year, however there was no doubt in my mind when I accepted. It is a massive honour to represent this team at any level, so I couldn’t be happier to be fulfilling such an important role. We are a team made up of wonderful, hard working women from all around the North East and beyond, I am blessed to be playing alongside these ladies, let alone be an advocate for them and the club we represent.”

Asked about the leadership group as a whole, Thomas added: “The leadership embedded throughout this team is outstanding. We have individuals who can motivate through their actions, build and boost confidence, and those who can ignite a game so that the players around them can play to the best of their abilities. Furthermore, I am excited that this year we will have 4 on-field co-captains who will help control and facilitate the game we want to play, and how we want to play it.”

Sharks Head of Programme Justin Loveridge commented: “Kenny was an easy choice for club captain because of the way she links with everyone on and off the field. This is just what we want from our club captain and she really fits into the Mowden family ethos at the club.”

Thomas will be supported by a total of 4 co-captains this year. England internationals Heather Kerr and George Roberts will be joined by Scottish internationals Sarah Law and Lisa Cockburn in the supporting roles this season. Asked about the new leadership structure, Loveridge added: “We felt the 4 co-captains would complement each other on the field to help develop a stronger leadership element within the squad. Each brings a different skill set which will be vital during the season.

“This group will help develop the culture and environment we want to see from our players.”
