Mowden record second pre-season win at Hull. (Match report attached)

DMPRFC’s second pre-season friendly took Director of Rugby, Danny BROWN, Head Coach Garry LAW and Mark LUFFMAN, Forwards Coach and a squad of 27 players to the Ferens Ground of Hull RUFC, where Head Coach Gary Pearce was looking to run his experienced eye over his current charges, since winning the North Premier League last season.

Fresh from a very promising pre-season start, first at Macclesfield RFC, with a 24 – 46 win and lately a win away against Bridgend Athletic RFC on a short Welsh tour, Hull RUFC were looking to continue their positive start against National League One opposition.

As both teams were put through their paces in the pre-match warm up, the Hull RUFC forwards looked at the least 10-15 kilos per man heavier than the visiting opposition, containing mix of youth and some experienced players such as Latu MAKAAFI and Lawrence COWAN.

DMPRFC chose to rest several 1ST XV squad players who were carrying minor injuries, but most of the assembled squad will be vying for a starting position come the start of the league season.

The game was scheduled for x4 20 minute periods, which is customary and which allowed both squads of players to rehydrate, in what were very hot conditions, on a very hard surface.

Hull started the better and applied early pressure on the visitors’ line, using their big forwards to batter away in an effort to make the breakthrough. This may have been the platform on which they achieved promotion, using a big pack, however the DMPRFC forwards are used to bigger opponents and the home sides efforts were repelled very enthusiastically.

After ten minutes of this type of pressure, DMPRFC scored with virtually their first attack, when a flowing move saw Callum MACKENZIE cut a fine line beating two defenders and when stopped just short, mercurial winger Chris McTURK was on hand to take the scoring pass, (0 – 5), debutant fly half Callum IRVINE adding the extras. (0 - 7)

Further pressure saw McTURK add his second try (0 - 12), after some excellent interplay, with signs looking ominous for the home side, as DMPRFC began to cut loose.

As the end of the first quarter came, a serious leg injury to Hull RUFC recruit, scrum half Michael GOODWIN, which was attended to a by a first responder ambulance, then when the extent of his fracture/dislocation to his ankle was known, another ambulance took him to hospital. All at DMPRFC wish him a speedy recovery.

The delay was patiently endured by both sets of players, who took it in their stride and the game resumed, with some replacements made by DMPRFC.

Hull gained the momentum which was lost by the visitors and scored a good try themselves wide out (5 - 12) and with the conversion a success, the gap was narrowed. (7 - 12)

However, this was as good as it got for Hull, as first their lock was yellow carded for a high tackle and on the back of pressure from a scrum, as series of pick and drives saw lock Max DAVIES force his way over. (7 - 17), replacement Warren SEALS adding the extras. (7 - 19)

Hull had conceded a lot of penalties and one or two players were warned by the official for persistently infringing. The experienced COWAN inexplicably red carded for a comment made to the official after being penalised.

McTURK completed his hat-trick just prior to oranges. (7 - 24)

DMPRFC were penalised just after the start of the third quarter, with flanker David FISHER sent to the cooler for a dubious tackle.

However, this did not impede the visitors, who were now showing their class, with a good try by flanker George STOKES, who cut an excellent line, scoring in the corner, (7 - 29) with SEALS converting. (7 - 31)

Lock Joe CRAGGS combined with No. 8 Ollie HODGSON for the next try, the latter going over for the score, (7 - 36), SEALS again adding the extras. (7 - 38)

In the fourth quarter, Hull did rally, but couldn't break DMPRFC's defensive line. However, the final word was left to flanker David FISHER, who had an excellent game, who linked with centre Ben FRANKLAND and with one defender to beat, brushed him aside to score, (7 - 43), SEALS converting for a final score of 7 - 45.

The score was immaterial, it was the comprehensive workout that was important and Hull provided that, although they will probably be disappointed. They shouldn't be, as their side will enjoy success in the new league, with their pack to the forefront.
