Young people participating in the Duke of Edinburgh Award and nurturing employability skills….

Mowden Park in the Community has delivered another successful 12 months of the prestigious Duke of Edinburgh Award. Initially started through a partnership with the Dallaglio Foundation’s “Powerful Together” partnership, the Community arm of the club has gone from strength to strength.

Delivering the awards to young people at Mowden Park, the local community and in partnership with Queen Elizabeth Sixth Form College, over 50 young people have taken part in the programme in the past 12 months, gaining the Bronze, Silver and Gold awards.
Aimed at participants aged 14 to 24 the DofE uses different activities and outdoor pursuits to encourage the development of key life skills such as confidence, commitment and team working. The sessions take place at the Northern Echo Arena and at Queen Elizabeth Sixth Form College. The club is delighted to have worked in partnership with Outdoor Ambition on the Expedition section of the awards during our time as a DofE registered centre.

Peter Westgarth, CEO, DofE said: “Sport is such a powerful tool to focus young people. Combining this with the DofE will give these young people an exceptional start to their life journeys, exposing them to different experiences and giving them the chance to nurture key employability skills.”

Founded in 1956 by HRH Duke of Edinburgh the award is now widely acknowledged as the world’s leading achievement award for young people. Mowden Park Community Manager Anne Rose is pleased with the progress in developing the award at the club: “We are thrilled to be engaging with and delivering such a widely recognised Award to young people in the Darlington area. We’ve already had a tremendous uptake over recent years with young people for bronze, silver or gold awards.”

“It has taken a lot of work to get to the point we are at now, but I am really looking forward to seeing how the awards develop in the area, particularly over the next 12 months. We know the power sport has for social change and we want to share this with more young people. We’re keen to support young people and give them a boost with their employability skills.”
