Sharks off the mark in Premier 15s with 2 bonus points in narrow loss to Wasps
Wasps FC recorded their first win of the Tyrrell’s Premier 15s season in a thrilling contest against DMP Sharks. The visitors went into half time leading 0-29, before a remarkable second half comeback from the Sharks.
It was the home side that started the brighter of the two teams, enjoying early territory and possession. The deadlock was broken after 14 minutes by Wasps captain Katie Adler after a well worked move, giving the visitors a 0-5 lead. England Prop Rochelle Clark doubled their lead on 20 minutes, having joined Wasps earlier in the week from Worcester. Wasps continued their dominant first half performance with a try from Abby Dow, before another Red Rose crossed the whitewash in the shape of Heather Millar-Mills. The first 40 was exemplified by the strong Wasps pack and it was Clark again who scored her second try just before half time. The visitors were good value for their lead and went in to the break 29 points ahead.
DMP Sharks looked to their own Red Roses in the second half, with Tamara Taylor and Katy McLean coming off the bench and having an instant impact. The comeback started on 43 minutes as Alex Webster dotted down from close range, converted by McLean. The tide appeared to turn as Kat Hobson crossed in the corner to narrow the Wasps lead further with McLean’s conversion taking the deficit to just 15 points. A yellow card for the visitors set up a nervy final 10 minutes, with a Georgina Roberts try narrowing the lead to just 8 points. Wasps appeared to put the game to bed on 77 minutes through a Hannah Edwards penalty, before a late Hobson try secured 2 bonus points for the Sharks. The game was a brilliant showcase of women’s rugby, with England internationals on both sides having a big impact.
The Sharks will be hoping to take their second half form into next week’s visit to Harlequins. Wasps meanwhile will face Richmond as they will no doubt be looking to build on their opening win of the season.
