Saturday saw Mowden Park 3rd team lift the Candy League Bowl, after beating Consett 46-29 in the final!

After the disappointment of losing the county cup final, Mowden Park 3rds travelled to Consett to take on their 2nd team in the Candy League Bowl final looking to finish the season on a high.

The game started evenly with both teams testing their opponents. Consett were first to get on the scoresheet with a penalty early in the game. Mowden seemed to get into their rhythm and played some great flowing rugby, sticking to the game plan and playing through the phases. This resulted in a well worked team try, with Tony Cator breaking down the right wing to score in the corner. The Mowden hooker Mark Bell stepped up to slot a challenging conversion from the right touch line. The Mowden team seemed to step it up a gear and before long Lee Ratcliff rolled back the years as he delicately chipped a perfectly weighted kick over the Consett defence for Cator to complete his brace, with Bell adding the extras. Mowden started getting a little complacent and thought they were playing 7's, throwing long passes across the pitch. The inevitable happened when a sharp Consett back claimed an interception and ran the length of the pitch to get the home team back in the game. Mowden finished the half firmly in control, when a strong carry by centre Chris Hyde led to a try in the corner for James Leonard. Again Bell stepped up and converted from the touchline.

Half time clearly came at the wrong time for the visitors, as Consett started the second half with renewed determination. A penalty kicked to the corner set up the opportunity for a Consett lineout, with the uncontested maul left unchallenged by the referee allowing the home team to cross the line with ease. Mowden set themselves from the restart, and after a number of phases, Danny Kay crossed the try line to extend the lead. Consett again managed to up their game, and scored a well-constructed try of their own, bringing themselves within 1 score of Mowden. During a scrappy period of the game, with both sides pushing for a crucial break, hooker Bell kicked two difficult penalties which seemed to settle his Mowden team.

Mowden went on to score the try that probably won the game, started with an accurate kick from Ratcliff. Chased by Cator, excellent support and quick hands from Danny Walker allowed John Allison to dot down in the corner, with Bell adding the extras. Although Consett kept applying pressure, defence was turned into attack when a turnover and quick hands saw Leonard complete his brace. Bell completed a near faultless kicking display with a well taken conversion from another tight angle.

Credit to the Consett team, who kept fighting to the end. The game finished with the home team scoring a converted try under the posts, however the game was already over, with the visitors winning 46-29, securing their maiden trophy in the candy league. Man of the match went to Lee Ratcliff for a dominant performance at scrum half.

Massive thanks to the travelling support!!
