Mowden’s Chris McTurk re-signs for 2019/20

Although it’s not been a season up to our standard we have a great group of lads who have the ability to go far next season

Darlington Mowden Park are delighted to announce that full back Chris McTurk has re-signed with the club ahead of the 2019/20 National One season. The full back has made 15 appearance this season, having re-joined the club in 2017. Reflecting on the season so far, McTurk said: “Although it’s not been a season up to our standard we have a great group of lads who have the ability to go far next season. It’s always great fun whether we are training or playing together so you always look forward to being with the boys.”

DMP Head Coach Garry Law was equally pleased to be re-signing the full back: “We’re pleased to have Turkey back for what will be his 6th season with the club. He is a fans favourite and a consistent performer when asked to play either wing or fullback. We look forward to Chris continuing to drive the standards within the squad with his performances next season.”

Since joining the club at 19, McTurk has made 70 appearances for Mowden over 2 spells at the club. The former Scotland 7s man has an impressive haul for Mowden over the years with 48 tries in 71 appearances. This season has seen the 27 year-old score 8 tries in his 15 appearances, including crucial tries in wins against Rosslyn Park (32-31) and Loughborough Students (47-30) which earned him the Man of the Match award on both outings. Asked about his highlight of the current season, McTurk commented: “There’s been some great moments this season but it has to be the away win down in Rosslyn when Warren nudged a penalty over from the final play of the game to get in the win. It was a great tough game of rugby.”

Asked how much things had changed since he first joined the club, he added: “I was 19 when I first signed so lots has changed with the biggest obviously being the stadium. The great thing is that there are still players and staff from when I first signed which really makes it feel homely. I do have to say, we never used to do contact in training which I used to love, I blame Luffers for that! But the club has made great progress in the right direction since I first joined and it’s got a very bright future.”

“It’s going to be good to make amends for some losses that we shouldn’t have had this season. But the main goal is just to have another year of fun with some top lads, we wouldn’t do it if we didn’t enjoy it so much!”

You can see Chris and his Mowden teammates in action for the final time this season next Saturday when they take on Bishop’s Stortford at the Arena on 27th April. Tickets will be available on the day priced at £10 for adults and FREE for U16s.
