10 tries for DMP in first pre-season outing of the year.

A trip North to the Scottish Borders and the picturesque setting that is the Mansfield Park HQ of Scottish Premiership side Hawick RFC.

Founded in 1873 and a former club of DMPRFC’s Garry LAW, Hawick RFC boasts many former Scottish Internationals such as Colin Deans, Jim Renwick, Tony Stanger, Colin Telfer, Alan Tomes and Stuart Hogg, not forgetting the voice of rugby football commentating, the legend that was the late and great William ‘Bill’ Pollock McLaren (CBE), Hawick born and bred.

Both clubs have enjoyed reciperocal home and away pre-season friendlies for the last few seasons, which have always been competitive and yesterday was no exception, as some free-flowing rugby was on show on a perfect day.

Current Hawick RFC club coach, George Graham ( former Scottish International and Newcastle Falcons RFC prop) saw his side compete at times with their English National League One counterparts, but overall the home side were not able to compete physically with their power and pace, with DMPRFC running in 10-tries, to Hawick RFC’s 4-tries in reply.

DMPRFC began strongly with two early tries, both scored by hooker Jordan POOLE, who crashed over from a couple of metres out for them both, with the conversions successful from Warren SEALS. (0 – 14)

Hawick RFC struck back and when a catch and drive lineout was hauled down 5-metres out, the official awarded the home side with a penalty try (7 – 14)

DMPRFC debutant full back Chris GEORGOIU was next to cross the whitewash, powering his way across the wrong-footed defence for the score. SEALS converting. (7 – 21)

A break by stalwart lock Talite VAIOLETI proved to be the catalyst for the visitor’s next score, backed up by flanker Joe CRAGGS, who’s sweet offload to Warren SEALS allowed the fly half the gap to score, converting his own try (7 – 28)

Some uncharacteristic lazy defence allowed the home side to add a converted try to their tally on the half hour. (14 – 28)

Former DMPRFC back Josh HALL made his return to the club with the first of his brace of tries at this stage, converted by Garry LAW. (14 – 35)

Hawick RFC then scored an excellent try of the own, which was converted to reduce the arrears. (21 – 35)

Visiting lock Jake BRADY was next on the score sheet, scoring from 20-metres to increase the lead of DMPRFC, the try converted by Law (21 – 42)

HALL then scored his second try with a fine individual effort. (21 – 47)

It was all DMPRFC as the game entered the final quarter, with LAW scoring a good try, converting his own effort to increase DMPRFC ‘s advantage. (21 – 54)

Hawick grabbed a late consolation interception try, again converted, (21 – 54), before DMPRFC underlined their superiority with an interception of their own from LAW, converted by him and a try for ASHER-WOOD capping a fine game for the winger. (28 – 66)

DMPRFC wish Hawick RFC all the very best for their season ahead.

Several other players made their debuts in this game for DMPRFC, but more about them in future weekly news.

The cobwebs blown away by all of the players travelling to Hawick RFC, as DMPRFC now prepare for this week’s more difficult proposition, when Championship side Leeds Carnegie RFC visit the Northern Echo Arena for the first time.
