Katy was introduced to rugby at her local club Westoe where she remained until the age of 12. After a brief spell playing regional hockey she returned to the sport she loves at the age of 18.

On her return to the sport Katy found herself at the doorstep of Darlington Mowden Park. Here she has become a key member of the Women’s Premiership team the DMP Sharks. Katy quickly moved up the ranks in England Rugby. Making her debut in 2007, Katy has become a mainstay in the England set and has established herself as a dangerous point scorer.

Since taking over the England captaincy in 2010 Katy has lead the England Women’s team to two 6 Nations grand slams and most recently World Cup glory when they beat Canada in the final to be crowned world champions.

In January this year Katy was award an MBE for services to women’s rugby.

Peter Barron MBE: Chief Editor Northern Echo

Peter Barron has had a career in the regional press for 34 years, having trained on the NCTJ pre-entry course in Darlington before getting his first job as a trainee reporter at the Scunthorpe Evening Telegraph in 1980.
Peter returned to his native North-East as a senior reporter with The Northern Echo in 1984, rising through the ranks to become the paper's news editor in 1990, and deputy editor in 1995. His first editorship came at the Hartlepool Mail at the end of 1997 before he returned to The Northern Echo as editor in 1999. He is also well known for running training courses around the country for aspiring news editors.
In June 2014, Peter was awarded an MBE for services to journalism and the community.
