Rugby World Cup arrives at Mowden Park

Webb Ellis Trophy arrived at Mowden Park as part of its tour around the country in the build up to the Rugby World Cup.

Darlington’s World Cup preparations got underway yesterday afternoon as The Webb Ellis Trophy arrived at Mowden Park as part of its tour around the country in the build up to the Rugby World Cup.

The trophy had been on a tour of the North-East as part of its 100 day tour ahead of this summer’s completion in England.

The trophy arrived in the North-East on Friday taking in sights around Newcastle, Gateshead, Durham and Hartlepool before arriving at Mowden Park, then rounding off proceedings with a celebratory dinner at Barnard Castle.

Members, supporters, local clubs and all the youngsters taking part in the clubs Summer Rugby camp got a once in a life time chance to have their picture taken with the cup and meet England 7s legend and former Mowden Park player Ollie Phillips.

Current holders of the trophy the New Zealand All Blacks will be based at Mowden Park for six days during the World Cup as they use the clubs facilities during their defence of the trophy.

Anne Rose, Mowden Park Community Manager said: ‘’It was a fantastic occasion for the club and our local communities. There is huge amount of anticipation building ahead of this year’s world cup and we’re delighted to be part of this build up.’’

‘’Having the World Champions New Zealand based here in October adds another dimension. We’ve already been inundated with interest and support in what is developing to be a very exciting season ahead.’’

Next up at The Northern Echo Arena is the Mowden Family pre-season BBQ followed by the 1st Pre-Season fixture vs Hawick (KO 3pm)

The BBQ is free entry with something for everyone including a chance to meet the first team squad along with the new signings.

A mixed O2 Touch Rugby competion will also be taking place on the main arena pitch and teams can still enter with entry forms available. Email info@mowdenpark.com for an entry form
