A closer look at the brilliant charities who will be joining us on Saturday for our Armed Forces Day.

This Saturday 11th November, Mowden Park will be hosting their very own Forces Day and will be helping to raise funds for Armed Forces Charities; Help for Heroes and the Royal British Legion. Both charities will be at the Arena raising funds for their very worthy causes. Look out for the collection buckets, poppies and wrist bands that Help for Hero bears and uniformed members of the Royal British Legion will be carrying around the Arena.

Help for Heroes and Royal British Legion are doing incredible work to support and provide opportunity for veterans, ex-soldiers, current soldiers and even their families. It seems only fitting to provide a brief description and example of the great work that is being done by the two charities.

Help for Heroes

Help for Heroes supports those with injuries and illnesses attributable to their service in the British Armed Forces. No matter when someone served, they believe that those prepared to put their lives second, deserve a second chance at life. They do this by offering courses and activities that aims to empower Armed Forces to look beyond illness and injury, regain their purpose, reach their potential and have a positive impact on society.

How they do it

Working with a vast network of professionals and partners, they help our Veterans and their families through physical and emotional rehabilitation, identifying new career opportunities as well as financial and welfare support.
Help for Heroes believe that those who served together, recover better together - supporting each other, enjoying the camaraderie and sense of fellowship once more.
The Nation has united behind our Armed Forces. During our first 10 years, we’ve directly helped more than 17,000 individuals and their families in this way. Offering this to thousands more who need it remains possible thanks to your supporter and specialist charity partners.

Royal British Legion

The Legion was founded by veterans after the First World War. A century on from the start of that conflict, they are still helping today's Service men and women, veterans, and their families in almost every aspect of daily life. We also champion Remembrance, safeguarding the memory of those who have given their lives for our freedom through Remembrance education and events.

The (Royal) British Legion biggest fundraising campaign is the ‘Poppy Appeal’ and that is the iconic red paper poppies you see many people wearing at this time of the year. The first campaign of the Poppy Appeal was 1921. The Legion ordered 9 million of these poppies and sold them on 11 November that year. The poppies sold out almost immediately and that first ever 'Poppy Appeal' raised over £106,000; a considerable amount of money at the time. This was used to help WW1 veterans with employment and housing.

At Mowden Park we are honoured to be a fund-raising event for these two fantastic charities at the Arena this Saturday.
