We caught up with ex-DMP prop Paul Hill on his time at Mowden and his progression into the England side.

England prop Paul Hill took the time to speak to us ahead of the upcoming England U20s game at the Northern Echo Arena this month. Having previously played for both Mowden Park and England U20’s, Hill gave his insight into the club and the value of International Under 20s rugby.

The current Northampton Saints player has played 5 games for his country, having previously represented Mowden Park during his loan spell from Leeds Carnegie in 2014. Having come through the U20s system, Hill has progressed into the England squad, most recently representing them in the 2016 Six Nations. On his experience of playing for the Under 20s, Hill said “It’s a massive stepping stone, not only into full international rugby but also into the Premiership. The intensity at U20s is so high, it’s a great platform for young players looking to express themselves.”

Having represented Mowden Park on 4 occasions, Hill knows the area well “It’s a great club, a really good place to play. I was on loan with DMP from Leeds and really enjoyed my time in the North East. I played 4 games for the club in total, along with Jack Walker who’s now at Bath”. The 21 year old has also played at the Northern Echo Arena in an international capacity, scoring a try in England U20s 26-11 Six Nations win over Scotland in 2015. “It was fantastic to get another run out at Mowden Park as I’m really familiar with the area.” Hill was also part of the U20s squad that won the 2014 IRB Junior World Championship in New Zealand, in a team captained by Maro Itoje.
One of the most-capped front rows ever to have played for the national Under 20s side, Hill stressed the value of the U20 programme “It’s a huge step up from the younger age groups, and it really prepares you for the vigour of Premiership rugby. Playing at such a high intensity really helped my progression through to the senior England side.”

From everyone at Mowden Park, we wish Paul the best of luck going forward with his career.
