The event, to be held on Saturday 2nd August (kick-off 7.15pm) will showcase some of the biggest names in rugby with Leicester Tigers, Sale Sharks, Newcastle Falcons and London Welsh all playing off in a round-robin tournament. The top two teams on the evening will then go forward to the Premiership Sevens Series Finals at the Twickenham Stoop on the following Friday.

Newcastle Falcons were originally due to host this year’s north leg but have fallen behind with installation of their new artificial pitch.

Premiership Rugby have today granted Darlington Mowden Park RFC the privilege to host the occasion in recognition of their first class facilities and growing reputation as a world class event venue.

"The Darlington Arena is one of English club rugby's hidden gems and we are delighted to be taking the fourth group stage of the Premiership Rugby 7s there at the start of next month," said the Commercial Director at Premiership Rugby, Dominic Hayes.

"The players and supporters of each of the four clubs will enjoy making the trip to Darlington on the 2nd August for a tournament which is covered live and exclusive on BT Sport - it represents a fitting stage for a high-octane night of top-class 7s."

Speaking about the announcement Darlington Mowden Park Arena & Event Manager Danny Brown said

“We are delighted that the Northern Echo Arena has been chosen to host the Premiership Rugby Sevens Series. This is a big event for the town of Darlington and it’s great that the Sevens Series has been able to remain in the north east. We have been working hard to build an events calendar that people from the region can enjoy. This is a significant step forward in that sense. It will be a great opportunity to showcase what this fantastic facility can offer, not only to the spectators but the many more watching live on BT Sport”
