This weekend, DMPRFC 1ST XV travel the 350-odd miles round trip to the Butts Park Arena HQ of Coventry RFC.

Founded in 1874, Coventry RFC are currently occupying fourth place in National League One, with 37 points, including 4 try bonus points and 2 losing bonus points.

Their top points scorer, full back/centre/fly half and captain Clifford Hodgson, is sitting in the gold medal position in the league, with 120 points, made up of 1 try, 23 conversions and 48 penalties.

Their top try scorer is Domian Lespierre, with 10 tries to his name.

Coventry RFC have been well established at this level, having dropped down from the Championship in 2004 and last season finished a creditable fourth in the league.

Amongst their new signings for the 2014/15 season was prop Henry Sandys, who played for DMPRFC last season. He was one of 4 new props signed by Head Coach Scott Morgan, along with other players, including wing Daniel Rundle, who played at Tynedale RFC last season.

Coventry RFC have retained the core of last season’s squad, which includes England Counties centre Will Hurrell.

DMPRFC could perhaps consider themselves unlucky not to get more league points out of last week’s game against league leaders Ealing Trailfinders at the Northern Echo Arena.

Tries from lock Rob CONQUEST and scrum half Zylon McGAFFIN, together with two conversions from fly half, were just not quite enough to overhaul the 21 points accumulated by a very professional outfit in Ealing Trailfinders.

DMPRFC managed to shut out the top team in the second half and moreover push for a draw or arguably and more deservedly the win.

Now for something National One related, but a bit more nostalgic.

Since the original third tier of English rugby was established with the advent of the league system back in 1984 (30 years ago now !!), of the then known as National 3, only one team remains in the league, which was then made up as follows:

Birmingham RFC (now Birmingham & Solihull RFC – National League 2 North – 4th tier)
Exeter RFC (now Exeter Chiefs RFC – Premiership – 1st tier)
Fylde RFC (the last remaining original club in National League One)
Maidstone RFC (now playing in London 2 – South East – 7th tier)
Metropolitan Police RFC (now playing in Surrey 3 – 12th tier)
Morley RFC (now playing in National League 3 North – 5th tier)
Nuneaton RFC (now playing in National League 3 Midlands – 5th tier)
Plymouth RFC (now playing in the Championship – 2nd tier)
Sheffield RFC (now playing in North 1 East – 6th tier)
Vale of Lune RFC (now playing in North One West – 6th tier)
Wakefield RFC (no longer participating in league rugby – disbanded in 2004)
West Hartlepool RFC (now playing in North One East – 6th tier)

Doesn't time fly.
