Visitors to the Arena this weekend are Birmingham Moseley RFC, who make the trip for the very first time from their Billesley Common HQ.

Historically, originally known only as ‘Moseley RFC’, they were the premier rugby club in Birmingham, reaching the final of the John Player Cup three times in the late 1970's and early 1980's.

They originally played at the ‘Reddings’ ground, but after a 5-year spell at the University of Birmingham, the club relocated to their current Billesley Common HQ.

Last season on 15th April 2016 with defeat to Bristol Rugby RFC, combined with results elsewhere during that same weekend, their relegation from the Championship was confirmed and they would be playing in National League One for the 2016/17 season under the name ‘Birmingham Moseley RFC’

Their coach is the ex-Bristol, Bath, Ulster, Rotherham Titans, Barbarians player Kevin Maggs, who although born in Bristol, had 70 caps for Ireland, qualifying via his Irish grandad who hailed from Limerick.

Former Leicester Tigers (274 appearances) and England International lock (29 caps) Louis Deacon has also been involved in the coaching set up and so the squad will be well prepared for the season.

In that regard, their progress has been more than satisfactory, in that they are currently lying in the silver medal spot in the league, having won 7 out of their 8 games so far, bagging 33 league points, which includes 5 try bonus points.

For the record their games have gone as follows:

v Fylde RFC (A) - W. 20 - 25
v Coventry RFC (H) - W. 19 - 14
v Blaydon RFC (H) - W. 41 - 13
v Ampthill & District RFC (A) - L. 26 - 8
v Cambridge RFC (H) - W - 72 - 14
v Rosslyn Park RFC (A) - W. 24 - 31
v Old Albanians RFC (H) - W. 56 - 33

Their only reversal was away at Ampthill & District RFC (26 – 8), where most teams in the league will find tough to visit.

In contrast, DMPRFC eventually overcame Ampthill (20 - 39) in a bruising encounter.

In their last three consecutive wins, Birmingham Moseley RFC have scored an average of 53 points per game and will be a tough proposition this coming Saturday.

Top points scorer is fly half James WILLIAMS with 48 points, whilst top try scorer is winger Ed Sheldon has bagged 4 touchdowns.

DMPRFC have lost their last two games, perhaps it could be said against sides against which we should have performed better.

To concede 22 points without reply in the first half against Loughborough Students last weekend was a score that would have had any team in the league struggling to overhaul.

Despite a brave rearguard action after oranges with a brace of tries from replacement centre James FITZPATRICK and 2 conversions from fly half Caolan RYAN, it was not to be.

Lock Jack JONES, full back Jamie BARNARD and centre Ben FRANKLAND were all replacement with varying degrees of injury, which is disappointing and unlucky.

Injuries are having a damaging effect on an already stretched squad and whilst this situation is being addressed daily, a remedy could be a result this weekend at the Arena, against much fancied opposition.
