AROUND THE GROUNDS: FYLDE RFC

With the 2016/17 season just around the corner we take a look at what’s in store for our away followers this season.

WHO: Fylde RFC

WHERE: Woodlands Memorial Ground, Blackpool Road, Ansdell, Lytham St. Annes, Lancashire FY8 4EL

Train
The nearest train station is Ansdell & Fairhaven which is on the Blackpool South to Colne route. From the station turn left and head down Woodlands Road, at the end of the road turn right onto Blackpool Road andFylde RFC is less than 200 yards on the left hand side. Total walking distance is 0.4 miles. The nearest mainline station is Preston which is on the West Coast Mainline and has connections to Ansdell.

Bus
The Number 7 Service runs between Cleveleys and Lytham via Blackpool and St. Annes and stops on Blackpool Road just a few hundred yards from The Woodlands.

INFO: Fylde first used the Woodlands for rugby union in May 1920.
During the Second World War, the Army took over the ground. In 1946 the President, G.W. Parkes, welcomed back members from the forces and the ground was purchased for £7,000. It was named the Woodlands Memorial Ground in recognition of those members who gave their lives during World War II.

WHO: Director of Rugby John Greenwood

WHEN: In last season’s two fixtures against Fylde, Mowden Park won both fixtures. 21-17 at Woodlands and 40-14 at the Northern Echo Arena.

WHAT: There are another four senior teams associated with Fylde, the Wanderers, the Saracens, the Vikings and the Vandals who play in the English North West Leagues; respectively in the NW Premiership, NW3 North, NW4 North and NW5 North. There is also a colts team who play in the Lancashire & Cheshire regional leagues.
